You are Here: Home: Chapter 4 - Website Design

If you build it, they will come......popular line from the movie "Field of Dreams" can be achieved for website owners following advice from WebsiteSr and other webmaster comments in our webmaster blog.

As you now have an understanding of general site basics from our first chapter, hopefully a domain name registered and have set out your keywords, it is now time to build your site. You can build your site from scratch, like this site was, or you can purchase Web Templates that you can customize for your site.  No matter which method you use, there are a few simple guidelines that all websites should follow to make it easy for users to browse and optimized for search engines.

Websites can be as simple from a simple web page to the complex solutions, e-commerce solutions, CMS (Content Management Systems) and search engine friendly website design - SEO (Search Engine Optimization).  If you choose to build your own site some popular website building software is Microsoft Frontpage 2003, Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Win/Mac, and Netobjects Fusion 9.0 Full Version

For the record this site was built using Frontpage 2003 and custom coding using straight hand coding in a text editor. However, you can use a simple text editor to create a website. You have to be well versed in html, and  css, however, to make a site that looks good and is functional. The software listed above makes it a lot simpler to create a site. I recommend checking out all three by clicking on each link and reading the customer comments. That should give you an idea of what you wish to purchase.

Now to get into some website design guidelines.

1. Make your pages for users, not search engines

Do not add anything to your website that tries to deceive your users. Don't present different content for search engines than you display for users. The only SEO benefit that does not apply here is the use of meta tags for listing your site description and your keywords. Your website users cannot see these unless they view your source code, but they are there for the benefit of the search engines. You should ensure that every page on your site has its own title, description and keywords. This should be simple for you to to do now that you have created your keyword and keyword phraze list from our lesson in Chapter 3 Keyword Strategies Anything other than this like the use of white text on a white background is considered cloaking and may penalize your site in the search engines or ban it completely from their listings.

2. Avoid tricks to improve search engine rankings

If you have created a niche site, about a subject that you are an expert on, then a good rule of thumb would be to ask yourself whether you could tell a competing site what you have done. There should be no secret to successful sites other that content ( how many times have I said that) good website design and getting other sites to link to you. There, if you follow our advice in this site, I just gave away the information to my competitors and I don't feel bad about it and have nothing to hide - no search engine tricks, schemes etc. Bottom line ask yourself that would you be creating something in your site if there weren't any search engines.

3. Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking

There are many link exchange programs that will do nothing to help your sites popularity.  The most effective way to get links to your site is to make it so great that related websites would like to have your link for their website visitors. Beyond that, once your site is complete, well formatted and optimized for search engines, you should seek out other sites by searching each one of your keywords, (from the list created earlier and hopefully you built your pages using these keywords) and browsing sites to contact them for a link exchange. When you contact them, make sure you give them some information about your site and request a link exchange with them as their content is related to what you offer.
